I will survey the history and construction of LVMB manifolds, which form a family of non-Kahlerian compact complex manifolds strongly connected to toric varieties. I will explain the nontrivial combinatorics emerging from their construction, and describe another link to the combinatorial g-conjecture—now a theorem—at the intersection of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and simplicial complexes.
